First things first, who is Crystal?
I am Crystal Kasper, wife and mother living in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am a personal style fashion blogger for www.newhipster.co.za. I have an insane obsession and passion for fashion and all it entails. Oh and I am an aspiring stylist.
Tell us a bit about how your blog, New Hipster, came about and how long you’ve been blogging.
Newhipster the blog came about towards the end of my second year in Marketing. I’ve always loved fashion but after completing a major project in my second year in marketing, which centered around the fashion industry I realized my passion and that this was the career path I was destined for. I had no idea where this path would take me or where to begin, so I decided to start a fashion blog as a way to document, express and share my personal style and love for all things fashion.
I have been blogging for two years now but have only really made it more of a priority and full time career this year. The creative behind the name Newhipster, which stands for new generation fashion hippie is one who just likes the hippies of the 60’s where it was all about love, peace and happiness and embracing the life, love and happiness that fashion brings with a modern twist.
What has been your most fulfilling achievement as a fashion blogger and what are some of the future goals for your blog?
Being that my blog is still so young I have not had that many experiences yet but I have to say that getting the opportunity to work and collaborate with amazing brands I have been a fan of for so many years has got to be my ultimate achievement. I’m definitely looking forward to growing and making many more memorable achievements. My goals are definitely to bring my readers more artistic, inspiring, creative and good quality content.
Who are your 3 favorite African fashion bloggers and what do you love about them?
Oh gosh there are so many bloggers who inspire me, but if I have to pick just three it would have to be:
Soraya de Carvalho- @Styleismything (Instagram), www.styleismything.net
Folake Huntoon – @Stylepantry (Instagram), www.stylepantry.com
Uzy Nwachukwu– @Uzypaws (Instagram), www.uzynwachukwu.blogspot.co.uk
I absolutely love these ladies fierce, bold, artistic and unique take on fashion. Each lady has her own unique style and never conforms to the norm. They always stay true to themselves, which is so evident in their work. These are qualities I find so inspiring; I definitely aspire to reach their level of artistry.
Do you think African fashion bloggers are valued/well-recognized? What do you suggest could be changed?
Being so new to the industry I haven’t really had time to research or look into the African fashion industry as a whole, but I must say the South African blogging industry is definitely on the rise and brands are starting to see the immense value in bloggers and what they bring to the table.
Describe African fashion in 3 words
Tribal, exotic and artistic.
What is the biggest challenge about fashion blogging?
The fashion blogging industry has definitely grown immensely on a global scale and sees new bloggers entering everyday who are almost all basically doing the same thing. I think the challenge of blogging is finding and presenting a platform of work that is unique and different from the rest.
What valuable lessons have you learnt from blogging and do you blog full-time?
I have learnt that consistency and quality are key factors in running a fashion blog or any type of blog in general. Never stop putting out good quality content that you are proud of, because you might think no one sees but people notice and this is what they appreciate at the end of the day.
Yes I do blog full-time, which has become a very fulfilling and time consuming job.
Any word of advice to all the bloggers out there who look up to you and follow your blog?
Always, always stay true to yourself. Never conform to the norm or try to do what everybody else is doing. Work hard, love what you do and everything else will fall into place.
If you were given the chance to dine with 3 people in the world and get advice from them, who would you pick?
Anna Wintour and Grace Codington
